New Delhi, October 30, 2026 – The INDIA bloc has pushed its planned “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar back by a day after heavy rain turned the lawns of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence into a muddy mess. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi announced the change on Friday afternoon, saying the symbolic proceedings will now take place on Saturday, October 31, at the same venue.
Standing outside 10, Rajaji Marg with other opposition leaders, Gandhi told reporters the decision was unanimous. “By consensus, we have decided to postpone today’s programme to tomorrow at the same time. Because of the rain, we felt it would be uncomfortable for seniors to sit in the rain, so we will hold the exact same programme tomorrow,” he said. The event is now scheduled for around 2:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. on Saturday, depending on the exact final timing circulated by the parties.
The “public impeachment” is a political spectacle, not a formal parliamentary process. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to preside. Kharge will move the motion against the CEC, and Gandhi will deliver the concluding remarks. One representative from each participating INDIA bloc party is also expected to speak. The proceedings are designed as a symbolic protest against what the opposition calls “vote chori” – alleged large-scale disenfranchisement through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Gandhi framed both Saturday’s event and the bigger programme the next day as part of a single fight. “Both programmes are about the demolition of democracy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and CEC Gyanesh Kumar and his crew,” he alleged. He invited anyone who wants to protect the Constitution to join the “Chalo Dilli” march on Sunday, November 1. That march will begin at noon from the Minto Road–Connaught Place junction and end at Ramlila Maidan, where the bloc plans a major rally demanding the CEC’s resignation and an end to the alleged vote theft.
Gandhi went further, accusing the Home Minister of actively trying to stop people from reaching Delhi. “Our party people and common people are being stopped. You watch what happens at Ramlila Maidan, and you will understand what is happening in the country. There is huge anger and pain because millions are being disenfranchised,” he said. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed the revised schedule on X, noting the incessant rain forced the change and linking it to the Sunday march.
The venue itself was a fallback. The opposition had tried for other locations including the Constitution Club and Talkatora Stadium but could not secure permission. They settled on the lawns of Kharge’s official residence after a preparatory meeting on Thursday attended by leaders such as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, K.C. Venugopal, Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress, and representatives from the Samajwadi Party, JMM, CPI(M) and others.
Opposition leaders present on Friday reiterated unity. TMC’s Derek O’Brien said the INDIA bloc is standing together and will win together. Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav also spoke, stressing the alliance remains united. Sources said the parties decided the proceedings should focus on political arguments rather than legal technicalities and should avoid any imagery that might appear to mock Parliament as an institution.
The background is the ongoing confrontation over the SIR exercise. The opposition has repeatedly accused the Election Commission of enabling the deletion of large numbers of voters in a manner that favours the ruling side. They have demanded Kumar’s resignation, claiming the process has undermined the electoral system. The Commission has maintained that its decisions were taken unanimously and according to procedure. The Congress earlier this week claimed it was denied permission for the impeachment event and accused the government of trying to silence ordinary voices after “destroying” the electoral system.
Rain in Delhi on Friday made outdoor arrangements impossible. Lawns turned muddy, and senior leaders would have faced clear discomfort sitting through several hours of speeches in the wet weather. The postponement keeps the sequence intact: the symbolic hearing on Saturday followed immediately by the larger public mobilisation on Sunday.
Gandhi described the two events as one continuous protest to defend the Constitution, the idea of India, and citizens’ right to vote. He said the opposition is not running multiple separate campaigns but a single, coordinated effort. The invitation to join the November 1 march was broad – political workers, civil society groups, social workers, journalists, students, and ordinary citizens.
Whether the rain delay changes the political temperature remains to be seen. The opposition is betting that the images and speeches from the postponed “impeachment” and the subsequent Ramlila Maidan gathering will keep the focus on the CEC and the SIR process. The ruling side has so far dismissed the charges as political theatre. For now, the INDIA bloc has simply moved its schedule by twenty-four hours and kept its plans for the weekend intact.
